The ten commandments

Fashions are changing at such a rapid rate thanks to the internet, blogging and super brands like Topshop and Zara to pump out catwalk looks in a matter of weeks.

But this still begs the question of what is tastefull? I know that if leather pants were the must have item next winter, I would be deciding for taste over trend. Fashion trends aside, I'm sure you will agree that there are certain fashion faux pas you should avoid. Here are my 10 commandments to ensure a chic look every time:

1- exposed bra straps. This look rears its ugly head more in the summer months and should only be left to Madonna in a stylized film clip. Match your bra color to the clothes you are wearing and if wearing an athletic back top or backless dress then match the bra to your look or layer up with a sheer tank.

2- too much cleavage. I'm not telling you to hide your boobs but unless you are at the beach, keep necklines modest especially at work and look more professional.

3- sheer clothing. There's nothing like leaving something to the imagination.

4- leggings are not pants. No matter what your shape, leggings and jeggings were not designed to be worn as a stand alone garment. Unless your 7 years old don't go there.

5- VPL- visible panty lines really are a fashion blunder. For slim pants and lighter colors chose your underwear carefully looking for laser cut scalloped edging in briefs. G-strings are only tasteful if not appearing outside a low cut jean or trouser. If your underwear is stretched, faded and old replace it with a slim fit new pair.

6- tight shirts. I see so many ladies in shirts with buttons threatening to burst open at the bust line and more often than not sleeves worn way too tight as well. Be honest with what size you are and if your shirt is too tight, try to unbutton it with a little tank underneath. A great alternative is a soft and draped silk blouse. Shirts look smarter tucked in with a belt than worn over bottoms as this can look frumpy.

7- too matchy matchy. Don't travel back to the 80's and match too many elements in your outfit. We are not in the era of ensembles with matching shoes, bags and eye shadow so give your outfits some edge with usually one standout feature.

8- heels too high. If your limit is 2cm or 15cm heels are much more chic somewhere in the midpoint. If you feel awkward you will look awkward so learn to walk in them and keep heels at a maximum of 10cm.

9- vinyl handbags. If you buy peanuts then you get monkeys is what someone very dear to me used to always say. This is so true for handbags. Invest in well made, leather handbags and keep the bling factor low. A minimal look is more timeless.

10- lack of grooming. Take that extra time out for yourself and get into a grooming routine. Ensure your eyebrows are shaped, nails are manicured and your foundation is the correct one for your skin. If you look your best you will feel your best.

Sales haul in Melbourne

Happy New Year to all and I don't know about you but I'm excited about another year of what fashion will bring us, what new trends will be created and of course shopping for those items I desire the most. I'd like to be a little more daring this year, you know try some new hairstyles, become a makeup expert and dress Parisian chic each day now that I have my book by Ines de la Fressange. As you can see I've set my goals high, so if I get half way there I'll be ecstatic.

So let's talk shopping. Don't you just adore these Chanel flats! I wish I could have bought them but alas I can keep dreaming. You see I was in Melbourne for Christmas and walked past the boutique on boxing day to see a line (yes folks) a line of people waiting to get in for a bargain. I didn't go in for a peak but instead snapped the shoes I would have bought (you know if the credit card wasn't exploding from the Christmas lunch at the Westin Hotel which incidentally was worth every cent)

Well I did buy some goodies and Melbourne did not disappoint especially in the shoe and handbag departments. Keep looking and I'll show you my haul.

I was admiring the Reed Krakoff handbags online recently and as I walked past Hermanns Boutique on Collins St I did a double take firstly as I loved the red colour of this bag in the window. On closer inspection I recognised this as the Krakoff design and the price tag was friendly so in I went for the first purchase of the sale season.

It's not the real thing but it's very well made, leather and exactly like the original product so I was over the moon and have been using it every since.

Well shoes are always on the agenda for me in Melbourne so I hit my two favourite shoes stores Luisa and Dolce Firme (you know I should have been born Italian because I seem to always buy shoes from there) Luisa has been renovated and has a little less stock than other visits but didn't disappoint with some old school Gucci style loafers by Stefano Stefani. They fit like a glove and were 50% off. The adrenaline was pumping and I was having an 80's deja vous.

The yellow driving loafers were from Dolce Firme across the road. Their reductions were more like 70% and I purchased 2 pairs for under $300. The other pair is in the picture below.

These grey patent shoes by Bianca Buccheri are just the perfect height and being a block heel means no sore feet at the end of the day. The colour is so me!!

Last on the list were a couple of pieces from the Scanlan & Theodore outlet shop in Melbourne Central and boy did they have some reductions.

This viscose rayon knit jacket with a half sleeve is a great layer over a soft dress or simply with jeans and the striped fine merino knit top with a boat neck is a true comfort piece in the trans seasonal weather. I also had my eye on a sleeveless leather jacket and a Givenchy studded leather cuff but the budget was reached so maybe next time.

The best part of all is that all my purchases complement each other in colour and form. I never tend to by 'hero' pieces that only get pulled out once in the blue moon as they are not value for money. And in case you are wondering I had already completed my summer shopping and am now buying for winter. How super organised is that?

It's now January 2nd and it's hit 33 degrees so my purchases will have to wait until the cooler weather sets in. It's okay they won't go out of fashion and I can now enjoy the summer clothes that have been waiting in the wardrobe with their tags on.......JK

Girl Panic

You've seen rockwiz on SBS yeah? Well, every time Julia asks the contestants what their first concert was, I'm mentally answering 'well, mine was Duran Duran in 1983 when I was 13!!!! No one is listening but every episode I'm taken back to that concert.

Well Duran Duran live on and on and I just love their latest video for their single Girl Panic. They have used 5 of the girls from the 90's 'supermodel' era and each mimic one of the Duran's and mime the song in between mock interviews and raunchy scenes which is what they were famous for with videos like 'The Chaffeur' and 'Girls on Film'

Of course my favourite super model is Helena Christensen and she plays Roger Taylor on drums. Ironically Roger was my favourite Duran back in they days when I collected every magazine that made mention of them and had Duran Duran playing constantly on my red tape deck. I even brought it to the beach with me in summer.

Here's to the 80's, the new romantic era and the music. The only thing I won't miss is all the hairspray. JK

Cream suit in December

Oh thanks Miranda for posing in my new studio suit by Country Road.

I'm always telling people to mix and match their suiting. In fact I don't remember the last time I wore a head to toe suit ensemble but this one has caught my eye as I love wide legged pants and the 2 button jacket.

A lot of my jackets are from the 90's (as I haven't purchased a suit for about 15 years) are 3 button (just waiting for the 20 year rule to come around) or just too large as the cuts were a lot different in the decade of deconstruction.

Well this suit is fresh and well cut. I'm getting a slight Bianca Jagger vibe from it and can think of lots of combinations with the pieces worn as separates.

In fact with this red and cold weather, I'll be wearing the jacket with some jeans tomorrow.

Okay so rumour has it that it's summer and that means updating the wardrobe for a swimsuit.

I'm always on the lookout for the perfect one-piece swimsuit. I find this garment the most difficult to buy as I'm incredibly fussy about colour, cut and practicality.

For me, one-pieces swimsuits cannot be:

Assymmetrical - what a disaster for the tan lines!!

Too narrow around the bust - let's face it, there's nothing worse than side cleavage especially after the age of 40, I just don't go there.

The wrong colour - I love deep plums, chocolate browns and other jewelled colours but instead I find a palette of swimsuit classics like electric blue, bright purple and terrible florals. And who really does where white? Not too good when arriving OUT of the water.

Full of bling - I don't want side clasps, beads, sequins, lycra lace and all the dingle dangles, keep it simple and sleek for me.

The mind trick - The one-piece that is cut to look like a two-piece. Well, I'm not appearing on the cover of a hip hop CD so that's a no again.

Wish me luck as I start my quest.

You know after my experience at Foreshore recently feeling old and conservative, I realised that in fact just because it's warm outside (well, it's supposed to be, here's hoping) it doesn't mean that you have to bare all to be stylish. It also doesn't mean that fake tan, bleached teeth, dyed hair and too much makeup is flattering no matter what your age. I was amazed at the amount of young girls not showing off their smooth pale skin, natural glossy hair and feeling that too much makeup is never enough. Believe me youngins, you'll never know how lucky you are until much much later on so love your youth naturally. Repeat after me -

Less is more......

I found this picture and just fell in love the girl in the photo. Her freshness, natural beauty and austerity are just so appealing. She is young and yet modern and fashion forward without being over the top. If I was 21 again (you know a couple of years ago - cough cough) this is how I would want to look.

Handbag heaven

You know I don't own a handbag that doesn't see the light of day. They aren't in my wardrobe long enough to collect dust as I constantly rotate them. Today, feeling a little rock'n roll, I've chosen my raspberry Balenciaga. Can you believe I found this at an op shop!! It has been beautifully worn in and is so soft and easy to carry.

Velo Canberra - my lycra heros

Cycling has become such a popular sport in Australia in the last few years and with Cadel winning the Tour de France this year it will only be more so.

Cycling is a sport I love to watch and participate in (time permitting....oh gosh don't get me started)

Every July for the last 11 years, I have followed each stage and been entranced by the riders, their efforts of endurance that go beyond belief and to be totally honest, I love the fashion side of it. The lycra, the legs, the crowds, it's all so exciting. In 2008 I went with my husband and daughter to Paris and watched the final stage (along with 500,000 others) Well, alas the Chanel boutique will have to wait for next time as our three days there were dedicated to le tour.

Well, I should get to the point of this post and it is in fact an interview I did with Allan Sieper, the team manager of Velo Canberra, THE best cycling team in the city and with the most eye catching kit.

I sponsor this team and wish them all the best for the year to come. Let me tell you, cycling is a commitment of long hours in the saddle, early morning wakeups and as a sport more tactical than you can imagine.

Read on for an insight into the sport, the team and the do's and don'ts of the sport.

Tell me about Team Velo and your involvement with them?

Velo Canberra is a local cycling team which started back in 2005. Initially the team started out racing on the National Circuit and helped support up and coming riders such as Chloe Hosking, Adam Phelan and Fabio Calabria who have progressed through to the professional ranks. Today the team predominantly trains and races locally targeting a few large national level races each year.

How are fashion and cycling related?

Many would agree that fashion and cycling are closely related. Road cycling comes from a long history of European culture which is heavily influenced by passion and style every bit as much as athletic performance. In Australia it varies a lot, but generally those who have been involved in cycling for some time, want to look good while they are taking part in the sport they enjoy.

Why is it cool to ride and not drive or catch the bus?

I believe there is nothing better than starting your day with a refreshing bike ride. When I drive my car to work, I look around and see everyone else just sitting there trapped in traffic. When I ride it’s good for my headspace and lets me open up my lungs and legs a bit before hitting the office.

What are your top 5 tips for looking the part on and off the bike?

1. Number one is to visit your local bike shop and talk to their staff about what you want to achieve on the bike, whether that’s a lap of the lake on the weekend, riding to work or taking up racing. They will help you get started with advice on the type of equipment you need.

2. Secondly if you are interested in racing make contact with one of the clubs in Canberra. The Canberra Cycling Club is a top club and caters from those new to cycling all the way through to professionals with a range of great development programs. (http://www.canberracyclingclub.org.au)

3. Get out on your bike and ride with others. It sounds obvious but one of the best ways to get into cycling is to ride your bike with others and learn from them; watch what others are doing and ask lots of questions.

4. Cycling is always fun, but riding in the right clothing and with the correct equipment is much more enjoyable.

5. Lastly remember coffee is your friend. Coffee stops, before, during and after rides are always encouraged.

Most importantly, where are the best places to fuel up on coffee after a ride?

Canberra has an increasing number of good places to stop for a quality coffee after your ride. In the past coffee shops were not that welcoming of cyclists, these days this has all changed and most coffee shops are eager to support bike riders. Beess and Co café in Yarralumla is a great place to stop, it has good coffee and food, it’s nice and close to the bike path around the lake and it’s a longtime supporter of Velo Canberra. Other cycling friendly café’s in Canberra are Velo Republic in Kingston and Lonsdale Roasters in Lonsdale St Braddon.

How can I get involved in cycling for a bit of fitness and fun?

A very popular way to get started in cycling is the annual Canberra Times Tour de Femme (13^th of November 2011) (http://www.canberracyclingclub.org.au/event_details/index.asp?IntCatId=26&IntContId=842).

This is a mass participation event which runs over a 20km circuit around Lake Burley Griffin. This event is open to everyone from the serious athletes, through to those that want to get out and have some fun out riding with other women. Each year this event sees over 500 women taking part and it’s a great festival atmosphere. In the past a number of Velo Canberra riders have won the event and our team are big supporters.

How do I register for this event?

Registration can be completed online prior to the event or the day before (with a $10 surcharge).

So if I want my gear to be swish and match (you know how I feel about accessories) where is the best place to shop in Canberra?

Again the best place to head to is your local bike shop. Many shops in Canberra stock a wide range of clothing and accessories and can help ensure that what you are buying is suited to your riding style. They can also make sure you accessories fit and are comfortable. Canberra has lots of great shops, so I would suggest heading to the most convenient shop first and shopping around if you can’t find the service that you should be getting.

Lastly, black or white socks?

White socks for road riding and black socks for MTBing, almost as importantly Sunglasses should always be placed over your helmet straps.

The recent article in the press about Melbourne clothing retailer GASP prompted me to write this post. If you haven't heard, it's basically a shapshot of what is occurring in the retail industry of late and that is, poor customer service. Please take the time to read it and tell me I'm wrong! Or better still peel my jaw off the ground after a company can respond to a customer's woes with comments to suggest that the rude service was completely justified.

I pride myself on customer service. The one-on-one attention is something that is just so difficult to find whilst out shopping for whatever it is you are after. It's one of the reasons I became a personal stylist. If you are unsure of the product you are buying you need assistance, help and a smile. I am fortunate enough to know what I'm looking for when out and about for clothes, but what if I need a new fridge? well, I expect good customer service from a knowledgable sales assistant who is genuine and friendly.

Let me give you a simple example of where it's all going wrong. I was recently with a friend who wanted to try on a pair of shoes and whilst it took one of us to interrupt the sales assistant at the counter who was texting on his iphone and quite obviously inconvenienced, once the shoes were produced we were handed the box unopened while the sales assistant disappeared and we were left to fend for ourselves. This and so many similar scenarios are happening daily and not only in the mall, but on the phone, at the supermarket - simply everywhere.

Where has the service gone? Where has the respect gone? Do sales assistants have our good will in mind when they are selling us something or too concerned about making budget for the week? Should a cafe owner tell their staff to brush their hair and not wear shoes with holes in them? Would a smile and a hello really hurt when a customer walks into a shop?

Okay, so you may think I'm old fashioned but I truly believe the service industry is in crisis. I'm too busy lately compiling wish lists on internet shopping sites and purchasing in the cloud as I feel like I'm really being treated like a customer. Let's take that designer handbag you've always wanted. You've saved up and finally you go into 'that' store to buy it. Chances are if you get fantastic service you will love it even more and treasure it. You will recommend the store to your friends and the value of that handbag will be increased. If your experience is negative, then you will doubt the purchase, devalue the item and in turn tell your friends to avoid 'that' store. Is this simple logic so hard to put into practice? You purchase an item with an experience attached to it, like the morning coffee on the way to work, like the wine you are buying to share with friends that evening, like the dress you will wear to a wedding.

I'd like to know that the retail sector isn't just blaming financials on their diminishing profits. I'd like to know that they are investing in their staff training programmes as I truly believe effective customer service will get people spending in a positive manner.

Wow, I had the honour of meeting Leona Edmiston last night at a Canberra Centre function held in one of the Dendy Cinemas.

Leona made a visit to Canberra to promote her new season collection in Myer. Leona offers her regular Leona Edmiston range, as well as Little Leona (3-5yrs), Miss Leona (6-13yrs) and now Leona+ for sizes up to 24!! How fantastic is that. Her collection was beautiful and feminine and a must coming into the party season to pick up a dress in a timeless design.

I had bash on the microphone as well to promote the personal shopping services at the Centre (photo not included - not too flattering, but thanks sis for taking snaps throughout the night)

A fashion parade followed, a gift bag (Leona pins stockings the pick of the bunch) and lastly some champagne. cheers JK

Wardrobe Envy

Have you ever had a friend with a wardrobe you could just die for? Well I found one of those collections on a recent visit to a client who 'apparently' needed me to audit her wardrobe. I told her I was ruthless and to be prepared for a pile of donations and instead I spent the whole visit gasping over her fantastic clothes and asking her exactly why she had required my services. We all have a sort of theme to the way we buy and dress and Louise certainly didn't disappoint. You will guess what her favourite colour is when you see the photos and her sense of fun and feminity was truly inspiring (says me wearing camel from top to toe when I met her)
I was also very taken with her taste in interior design so wished to incorporate the two and photograph some of her favourite pieces around her home and let her tell you a little about them. Welcome to the world of Louise's wardrobe, a fantasy of form and colour.

I was conducting free 20 min style sessions for 2 days. The 'speed styling' task for me was 30 ladies in 2 days and YES I got a couple of names mixed up and was totally talked out by Saturday night when I was invited to a friend's place for dinner. I let them entertain me and I was happy to sip on red wine...JK

Those of you with children know that they are undoubtedly the hardest family members to pack for – whether it be for a night or a month they usually all need the basics. Pack for them first and then concentrate on yourself last so you have a clear mind.

Ask you child/ren to pick one favourite book, one favourite friend (usually for sleep and travel) and their favourite piece of clothing. Giving them some input will give them the sense that they too have packed, and they have made some choices.

Remember the essentials: nappies or undies, socks, singlets, swimmers and pyjamas. Next – tops (short and long) bottoms, a warm knit, one go anywhere jacket, two pairs of shoes and some sort of activity to keep them occupied whilst travelling. I find stickers and colouring the best and the lightest to carry.

It’s okay to pack extra underwear and tops as these tend to get dirty easily, but avoid doubling up on outer layers, as children will usually wear them only out of necessity.

Give your child their own bag. There are some fabulous mini suitcases on the market and this will make sorting out what’s what when you get to the other end so much easier. Children love to pull along their own bag and, if it all gets too much for them, the bags are small enough to place on top of yours!!.

Getting organised

The secret to packing well is preparation, just as it is for shopping. I don’t mean making lists and ticking them off; but have a methodical way to address it…leaving it to the last minute is not a great idea!

The secret to my packing success are packing cells and I buy them fromKathmandu. They are available in different sizes and colours and are also a great way to pack dress shoes. These clear cells are ideal for makeup and jewellery.

Your luggage will consist only of these cells and each will contain one type of item, for example: underwear, tops, bottoms, shoes, dresses etc. The way to pack the clothing into the cells is to roll everything. This will reduce the need for ironing and make finding items much easier.

What to pack

Break your holiday down into events. Do you have a wedding to attend? Friends to visit? Did you win tickets to Justin Bieber? Whatever the case, pack THAT outfit first and the rest around it.

Next, do your underwear. Make sure you have one light coloured bra, and one dark coloured, same with underwear. Nylon lazer cut styles with a scalloped edge are easily washed and dried and won’t give you the dreaded VPL (visible panty line)! The best and cheapest ones are in Target.

Lay the clothes on your bed and be ruthless in your judgement. Remember, bottoms will be worn more than once. Only pack one jacket, one or two cardigans, one scarf, two pairs of shoes (three if you need more for a special occasion) one or two belts, and one or two dresses.

Ask yourself: Can all the pieces can be coordinated with each other to form a capsule wardrobe? Can you walk all day in those shoes? Do you have a casual pair and a pair for evening?

Last of all, place few pieces of jewellery around the clothes and stand back. Your eye will tell you if all your choices are harmonious. Cull any pieces that are excessive, keeping in mind most of us indulge in a purchase or two whilst away. Roll your items neatly into your packing cells and Voila!

Now this final piece of advice was given by my mother and I live by it. Once you have decided what you are taking, take out the complete outfit you are travelling in and lay it to the side. This will make it easier in the morning for that ‘early flight’ and ensures one less decision having to be made. Do the same for your little ones.

Toiletries

You don’t have to take too much and these are often quite heavy. Purchase sun creams, shampoos etc whilst away or use the ones at the hotel.

Essentials are deodorant, face cream, night cream, hairbrush, hair product, makeup brush kit, makeup and makeup remover. Many manufacturers now offertravel or sample size kits – these can be a fantastic way to keep your favourite products with you without lugging a massive toiletries bag.

A dirty laundry bag is also a must.

Don’t forget

Chargers for your mobile, computer, all necessary phone numbers stored in your phone, itinerary for flights, accommodation and hire car in hard copy, passports etc. I store these in a travel wallet from Kikki K and will keep receipts in there for the reconciliation of bank statements later.

If on a long trip, a travel journal is a great way to record your experiences, places of interest and hotels visited. You can also write phone numbers and any other important information in the back for reference and in case the batteries run low on your phone.

The week before departure

The week before travel have appointments in place for waxing, hair and any other treatments that make you feel your best on your holiday.

In vain, I have searched high and low for a knitted cape such as this for the winter season. What a comfortable outfit but with so much class!!

This picture was taken in Milan by The Satorialist of a young woman wearing this cape, matching it with a camel knit and jersey pants (most likely from the Chloe collection) Finishing this easy wearing look with eye popping pumps gives it such a youthful appeal. It's so refreshing to see some of the younger generation wearing classics and non figure hugging garments but staying chic and sexy at the same time. Remember, what is left to the imagination leaves a woman so much more alluring than too much flesh.

The JackandJil site is one of my favourite fashion blogs. The photos on it are rarely full body shots but instead focuses on the detail of dressing in this case accessories.

The trend that has been picked up here is the designer watch with beads on the same wrist with of course a designer clutch. How practical these bags are I'm not so sure but they are appearing on several streetwear blogs and the catwalk along with old style school satchels. This look has so many options with colour and pattern combinations but I chose this shot for the gorgeous harmonious colour palette......JK

It's hard to believe that chunky knitwear is making a comeback from it's last stage performance in the 80's. Thank-goodness this time around it is more girly with ultra skinny belts and feminine flowing skirts. Also try longer styles over leggings with eye catching boots.

HerCanberra is a recent website to the nation's capital that has been started by Amanda Whitley and is described by her as "Part blog, part city guide, part fashion & beauty mag: it doesn’t really fit neatly into any one category. But, if you’re a labels chick, ‘online magazine’ is probably the nearest you’ll get.

But that’s ignoring one of my biggest aims for HerCanberra – and that’s to provide a virtual community for local women…I want visiting the site to be kind of like catching up for coffee with a group of friends, where you talk about what’s in the news, good places to eat, swap recipes, talk about family and friends, share fashion and beauty tips, opinions on books and movies, and much more.

Amanda approached me to be a regular contributor on her site recently and of course with her vision and energy, I just had to agree. Amanda wants to site to be interactive so please feel free to comment as much as you like as this creates conversation and networks especially for those people at home such as young mums who crave the outside world. Colour fiesta vs label overload

I am so excited about the cover, so vibrant and as I walked in a daze pushing a lopsided trolley through the supermarket today, I stopped and really thought 'wow what a cover' the COLOURS!! emotion = happy

I got home and couldn't put my groceries away quick enough, boiled the kettle and settled in with my cuppa to absorb the summer vibes, the bright hues and be inspired.

I have but one criticism of this issue as my emotion = disppointed.

The editorial is made up of a huge % of Prada and a healthy helping of Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton which are labels I love love LOVE, but I felt like I'd seen the entire summer collection in the magazine and that no other labels existed. Makes me really wonder who's paying who to get so much exposure (sorry free advertising) AND Prada got the cover as well. I would like to know what's going on behind the scenes and how 'stylists' are really chosing the clothes and accessories that go into these shoots.

I saw no Jil Sander who made waves with a striking collection of colour blocking, also Jonathan Saunders who's collection caught my eye on the Satorialist's blog page. No Celine? the label that has given us the rebirth of minimalism?

And a big mention to the Australian labels that really miss out on getting editorial. Amongst my favourites: Scanlan and Theodore, Gorman, Willow, Thurley, Akira and even Colette Dinnigan. Why don't we celebrate our own fashion on the cover of Aussie Vogue?.......mmmmm makes me wonder. JK

Colour palette for winter 2011

Beige, natural, camel, taupe, nude, whatever you can these colours, they are HUGE for winter 2011.

What will you be seen in as the cooler months approach? Here's a few tips to guide you:

Tailoring is a must, so stay classic and give these basics your own touch of quirkiness with accessories that suit your personality and look. Classics that you must own include a trench, blazer, fur trimmed jacket and of course the cape.

Add texture with fur either in a collar, scarf or a whole cropped huggie jacket.

Team your outfits with ankle booties, wedges, oxfords and tortoiseshell glasses.

Hair is wash and go and never overstyled. Try a tossled top bun or a side front braid as an up do.

Nails are cropped and polished either in a nude or a deep raspberry for contrast.

Team chunky knits over sheer dresses tied with a skinny belt.

Try knitted tights for colour and wear with strappy heels (oh so Prada)

Military anoraks over feminine underlayers are also centre stage for winter.

Animal prints work beautifully with this colour palette so stay safe of make a statement especially with leopard print!!

Remember don't just get dressed in the morning, DRESS UP.......JK

Eyebrows - the window to your face

Okay so eyebrows are about the first thing I notice on someone's face.

Keira Knightley has the most amazing shaped eyebrows with a beautiful arch, thickness and colour - so strong and bold which adds so much character to her face. No wonder she has been chosen as a face for Chanel.

The photo on the right is how I see so many women and gorgeous young girls get them shaped.

This does no justice to the face as it is unbalanced and undramatic.

The early 90's saw eyebrows get waxed and plucked so fine they barely existed and Kate Moss became the poster girl for the look. Quite in contrast to the deconstructed and grungey fashion at the time.

It is fashionable now to let them take their natural shape and take dominance over the eye area. I had the unfortunate experience of having my eyebrows waxed too thin this week and have since been using an angled brush and brown shadow to fill in the shape. Avoid this happening to you as growing them out is time consuming and tedious. JK

Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne how I love you.

The city of stylish people, great architecture and of course - SHOPPING!

This was a roof top garden I quickly snapped in the car last time I was there close to the CBD, I loved the contrast between all the concrete and then some trees just about to burst their Spring leaves nestled above. For once the trees get a view!

So where do I go when I visit Melbourne? Well there are a view favourite places amongst them:

1. Accomodation - The Westin Hotel on Collins Street. Apart from the fabulous location and decor, the staff are always friendly and the atmosphere pleasant. The bathrooms are huge and the rooms tasteful and roomy. For someone who loves a hot breakfast this hotel does not disappoint.

2. Coffee - The Postoffice Cafe (cnr Russell and Little Collins Street) for the best coffee in the CBD. A small place but always busy with city workers, cyclists and regulars.

3. Lunch - Amiconi (North Melbourne) An intimate Italian restaurant (featured in the first underbelly series) with a mouth watering menu and great service. The lunch special is value for money and you will get traditional Italian cuisine not the carb loading others offer.

4. Dinner - Il Barcaro (Little Collins St) Yes, I know Italian again, but I keep going back. I love being greeted in Italian and sitting in a dark restaurant sipping on red wine and feeling like I'm in Europe......

5. Haircut - Fur (City Square) Ask for Frank the owner, he is not only a great haircutter but a comedian in his spare time. His has a great knowledge of fashion and trends and always recommends the latest bar/restaurant that is going on and believe me these change on a regular basis in Melbourne.

6. Shopping - Have you got a spare 5 hours and I'll tell you!! I'll save this for another post.

7. A quiet drink - The Hairy Canary (Little Collins St) Sit at the window and watch the world go by over an afternoon glass of wine.

8. People watching - The steps of the GPO building on Elizabeth Street.

Describe your personal style? It’s changing as I get older, I’ve started incorporating more colour into my look, also less street wear and more classics like Fred Perry and Lacoste. I like to look Euro Preppie sharp but not conservative with a bit of Rock n’ Roll.

I build my daily look around? For work, I go mainly for a suit but add colour and a pocket square. Also I try and stay away from the preditable. I love a good merino wool knit like a John Smedley. Weekends, I can still wear a knit or a t-shirt with Nudie Jeans and Clarks Desert boots, driving loafers, Campers or vintage style sneakers

Favorite music? Mainly Rock n’ Roll bloke, 60’s Soul (Motown Stax, Chess), 60’s R&B, 60’s Garage, Chicago Blues, Funk, Alt-Country, 80’s Alt-Music and I still love my blues-Based heavy rock.

Favorite designer/s? I’m not so much into designers but rather into certain brands and looks. Paul Smith would be a designer that comes to mind from his sharp designs.

The first thing I look at in another person’s outfit…? I can’t say one thing, for me it’s the overall look with cool accessories such as a Tootal Scarf or silk pocket square. On my wife, I love seeing her Italian knee high boots with Nudie Jeans or skirt and coloured or patterned tights. When I first went to Rome in November 1994, I thought all the Women knew how to dress in their knee high boots and leather coats.

Favorite store/s? Calibre, Prime (little Collins Street), Nudie Jeans, Dakota 501, Lots of On-line stores like Oi Polloi, ASOS Rapha (for retro cycling style) and DNA Groove . John Hanna in Canberra has some very stylish gear and he knows his stuff.

Most stylish city? In Australia, Melbourne hands down. In the places I’ve been in Europe, toss up between Florence and Como, Italy.

Favourite accessory? My new TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph with GULF Racing stripes that I got for my 40^th Birthday.

What does style mean to you? How I look and dress is a reflection of who I am. Style is something that nearly everyone wants as everyone wants to look cool! What’s the saying, “Style never goes out of fashion”.

I spend my weekend…? Normally, get a 2-3 hour ride in finished with a coffee at Beess and Co; lunch with my family and some friends on one of the days at Sfoglia Cafe, shopping in town, looking at CD’s, spending time with my beautiful wife and daughter, dinner with friends and trying to catch up on house things. Nothing too outrageous these days.

My outfit for a dinner date would be…? A nice knit with pants and a jacket or my new slim cut DB made to measure suit from John Hanna.

Meeting Gok Wan

I always knew that the Westin in Melbourne was my favourite hotel in Australia. I've only stayed there 3 times but seem to be fortunate enough to meet or see a celebrity there each time.

Last weekend whilst having a few days away, I was on my way down to the lobby to get to Bourke St to meet a client for a shopping date. There, right before me was one of my idols of personal styling Gok Wan checking in. I simply had to introduce myself and before I knew it there was a camera pointed at us.... and voila the proof is in the photo.

What a pleasure to meet someone I admire and oh so well groomed!!!

So forget Pandora for me, I want something with substance and 'bling free' a little bit rock'n roll and a something that can be worn every day.

Well whilst never really on the look out for one I found these bracelets for men by Cudworth Enterprises and the line is called Hardware. I chose my stainless steal beads and voila I had my own personal bracelet.

You can find these at the Village Jewellers in Manuka and what a great father's day idea instead of a boring old gardening tool or a cook book. JK

Favorite designer/s?
Akira Minagawa is an epic textile designer who is behind Mina Perohnen. I think there is something really cool about how every part of the clothing produced has been considered, from the very first drawings that go into the fabric patterns, to the production techniques used and then ultimately the form of the garments. They describe the brand as ‘working to produce clothes which do not lose their allure through lapse of time’. This underpinning philosophy inspires me; it speaks of a way of life and of values that I want to embody in my life.

Favorite store/s?
I like to covet most items in Department of the Exterior, there are some really beautiful things in there! Itrip Iskip in Braddon is a fantastic place too, can always count on finding something lovely there!

My purple scarf, it is easy to add it to an otherwise monotone outfit

So I'm walking through the mall last week and I sail past the Chanel counter in town and I stop to say hello to the counter manager.

Well I've been on the lookout for the 'perfect' red lipstick for a while and wouldn't you know it, Chanel had a makeup artist there for the week to promote some new products.

He plonked me on the CHAIR and in a flash had me looking like Audrey Tatou with pouty full red lips. I felt like a celebrity and loved the pamper. I purchased Rouge Coco lipstick no.22 called Paris, well as soon as I heard the name I was sold of course. I can pretend I'm there each time I wear it......love JK

the gentlewoman

I am the proud owner of a new magazine (Issue no.1), the anti-gloss, anti-glam "biannual magazine about - and for - exceptional individuals, The Gentlewoman sets its sights on the fantastic women of the modern age"

This is from the makers of the magazine Fantastic Man that I had heard about originally from Scott Schuman and was pleasantly surprised to see this magazine at a newsagent in Canberra.

It appeals to me as it takes on the opposite format of most glossies and has an array of features on 'fantastic women' such as Phoebe Philo (seen on the cover) being the name of everyone's lips right now and Celine the most desirable brand on the planet. Being a minimalist at heart she is definately one of my modern heros of fashion.

The photography is gorgeous and the fashion shoots only list the brands worn and not prices giving it a much less commercial feel.

diary of a shopping date

Welcome to the diary of a shopping date with the lovely Denise from Elegance Beauty in Centrepoint Civic.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Denise as a client of her salon for the last few years and now she is a client of mine!! The service I provided to her was the Basics Package, being a combination of a wardrobe audit and 2 separate shopping dates. Denise had a wardrobe full of old clothes that were a combination of work outfits from her corporate career, clothes that were not suitable in terms of shape and colour (example in a photo below) and of course some sentimental pieces (don't get me started!)

Once completed we had an extensive shopping list. The mission was to find clothes that suited Denise's new career as a business owner and could be translated into a casual wardrobe as well. The big issues were comfort, durability and functionality.

For the second shopping date we had some fun taking photos to show how to make the correct decisions from the clothes rack to the change rooms. With Denise it felt like a best friends' day out shopping, and eating way too many calories......all I think of is banana bread...mmmm

So how do you shop? Usually by emotion ('I need it because'.........'something made me upset so I need a pick me up'........) and habit ('oh look a sale rack, there must be something on there I could take home'........'oh look at those print t-shirts I'll just sneak a purchase in although I already have 54 of them'......). I'm sure you get the picture.

Not many of us plan our shopping trips, know what shapes and colours suit us and make informed choices based on what a garment is constructed from and how this reflects its price. Here a few things that I helped Denise with on our shopping date, and I tell you folks she is a very quick learner, I need to steel some gold star stamps from my daughter's homework book for her.

Denise had been scanning the shops before our meeting and had seen a top in Oxford that she wanted to show me. I was inquisitive about what she had picked out and to see if she had taken on my 'rules' for her new wardrobe. Well my star student picked out the top pictured above in the steel blue colour perfect for her shape and colouring - I was so proud.

I also picked out another top for her with beautiful flounced lace sleeves in a beige with a high neck perfect for a hot summer's day whilst keeping the upper arms covered.

As Denise was signing up for the shop's reward programme (a must for every purchase at every store - its free and it keeps you in the loop ) I casually spotted a leather jacket looking very inviting on a sales rack. Well that was a hit once she tried it on and by the time 25% was taken off the sale price because Denise had signed up the total was a fraction of the original price....that's what I call smart shopping!

Just a note about the jacket, Denise has tiny tiny shoulders so she bought it in size 10 to fit her shoulders not her hips. The sleeves were then the correct length and this saved her added money on any potential alterations.

I was lucky to get this shot in at all. Denise had just hit the couch at the cafe, had emptied her old bag and filled the new before I could say 'was that skim or full milk in your coffee?'

Her old bag on the left was too big for her small frame and the straps were frayed so it needed to be updated. The new bag is the correct size, fully lined with plenty of compartments (don't we all need to know where our phone and keys are at a moments notice!) and most of all suits her fun 'young at heart' personality. This was purchased at Oroton at 50% off so a great buy.

Doesn't she look like a kid in a candy store, this was her favourite purchase of the day.

First of all forgive the terrible lighting in these photos (I woudn't make it in Annie Liebovitz's studio) This is perfect example of how the shape of garments can affect our silhouette and proportion. On the left, Denise is wearing an old work suit. Besides that fact that is not ironed (which I will forgive her for as she did bring it with her) the shape of the jacket does not suit her pear shaped frame. Her small waist is concealed, the jacket's hem finished at her hips being the widest part of her body and the sleeves are too long. What she requires is a traditional blazer shaped jacket buttoned at the waist and cropped in length.

As you can see on the right, the dress has a self waisted feature in a darker shade to show off her best asset, the sleeves are slim fitting and 3/4 length (such a sexy length with bangles and cocktail rings) and the skirt skims the hips to accentuate an hourglass silhouette instead of the boxy cut jacket which gives you a.......you guessed it, a boxy shape. She also looks sizes smaller in the correct shaped garment.

Well this lighting is better don't you agree? The look a little like mug shots I but lets just focus on the colours.

All these colours are similar but not the same, can you tell me why? Take the time to put colours near your face to see which ones work.

The lavender top on the left is too bright for Denise and clashes with her hair and skin. On the right the fuschia top has a yellow base which heats up her skin and again clashes with her hair colour. The steel blue colour has a blue base which cools her skin, and complements her eyes and hair. This was the top that Denise had originally picked out.

Colour differences can be subtle but it is so important to get them right. If shopping with a friend really ask them to step back and tell you if the colour suits you. If you are 'looking well today' you have the right colour on, if you are 'looking tired today' you have the wrong colour on.

Scarves, I absolutely live in them in winter and they can make or break an outfit.

The pale blue scarf is too washed out for Denise (see, she isn't even smiling because she knows it), whereas the bright graphic print of the grey scarf is eye catching and dramatic. Take your time with accessories as they are usually what the eye picks up first and make up 1/3 of your look.

Claudio has over 100 photographs of himself dressed in various combinations of clothing and accessories that all come from his online shopping website based in Italy. Attention to fit, cut and most importantly colour are what gives this man his style. I know, I know really behind the times (4 years to late) but boy am I loving this book!

One of the mums from my daughter's school gave it to me to read and it really is like going back in time when I worked in Melbourne behind the scenes.

It's an easy read, educational (in a bitchy sort of way) and you are sort of convinced that the rag trade is all put together to pull the wool over our eyes BUT if you are into fashion, celebrities etc you are guaranteed to love it. A non-cerebral read that will make you laugh JK

So is it just me or is the naked lady miu miu print just driving you crazy? I've seen it in most of my regular fashion blogs, and in just about every fashion mag for the last 3-4 months as part of a fashion spread. Tavi devotes post after post on this label.

I'm not criticizing the work of Miuccia don't get me wrong but you have to wonder who is pulling the strings to get all this editorial. The large fashion houses are a mix of labels with elaborate facades and a constant rotation of designers at the helm. Does Miuccia really have the time to design full ranges for her two labels?

If someone gave me a miu miu garment with this print on it I simply would not wear it, I've been over sensitized so to speak. This has happened as well with the sculptured shoulders which Balmain graced us with 2 seasons ago. By the time they hit our shores and are splayed through all the department and chain stores you don't want to know. My friend calls them the 'ga ga' shoulders and rightly so as they are now part of our pop culture.

We have seen Audrey in the films Amelie, The Da Vinci Code, and recently Coco Avant Chanel

which is a real favourite. She has a chameleon quality of being able to change looks to suit each role and I always love her hairstyles.

The other great asset she has are her eyebrows which are dark, strong and beautifully shaped, eyebrows are so under rated.

Soft leather & clogs

Who would have thought that these would be 'fashionable' and for the summer? I wonder how these trends will be interpreted in the Australian market? and particularly for the Canberra market?

Natasha Poly wearing a butter soft Celine dress summer '09 paired with clogs, you could pull this look off with a smaller bust and the colour matches so well with blonde or red hair.

A soft leather skirt is probably a more versatile option. I saw a gorgeous brown wrapped leather skirt in the Scanlan & Theodore winter range - an investment piece well worth the money. I would wear mine with a fine gauge cotton knit and some embellished flats.

Clogs, the skinny young things and the models off duty will probably wear them with their denim hot pants, but I would wear them with jeans or a skirt. Not sure about the YSL ones with the fluff on them, my cat would love them!

We've just had Australian Fashion week in Sydney but local duo Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton who formed the label Sass & Bide in 1999, recently showed their latest range at London fashion week.

The Canberra Centre has a store opening soon on the top level next to Veronica Maine. I'm sure this store will do well with it's multitude of denim, rats pants, t-shirt and loose layering weekend options all with a very rock star/tribal feel to them.

I do find in interesting that they never use colour. A palette of black, white, denim and various embellishments is their trademark sure, but how long can you play the same song. I also couldn't look at another t-shirt with a sequinned bow on the front which has been reproduced by every chain store possible. That's the price you pay when you enter the mainstream.

I'll certainly be taking clients into the shop to spark up their casual wardrobe - JK

Nostalgia pt 2

Okay so now that we are on the topic, I'd like to share with you this photo which hangs at my parents' house. I look at it every time I am there and always find myself stopping to take notice of it.
It was taken in my father's village on the island of Cephalonia, Greece in the late 1930's. I have visited this village a few times which is situated on steep, mountainous and unforgiving terraine with a beautiful backdrop of the mediterranean at it's feet - difficult to get to by car let alone by foot and donkey which was the norm back then.

Just look at how people dressed in every day life in a working village! Suits, belts, hats the works. There was so much pride in appearance and not pair of tracksuit pants or thongs in sight!

My favourite person is the boy under the almond tree with the double breasted jacket and shorts looking so happy and mischievous.

I hope you like it as much as I do.

A photo of my baptism in 1970, just adore all the men in well cut and fitting suits and skinny ties as opposed to some of the modern disasters that grace the racks of certain men's outlets. The ladies, in sensible hemlines and shoes and coiffured hair. Little did they know they were entering the decade where fashion would change dramatically.

I love the snapshot in time and to observe how we have changed in terms of presenting ourselves, the fashions, the observation of life changing and people with it.

I couldn't function without knitwear in my wardrobe (cardigans being a staple item) and am completely 'acrylic' phobic. If it doesn't say wool, silk, cashmere or cotton it's not a sound investment, it will look cheap and nasty and won't have that soft luxurious feeling of a natural fibre on your skin.

If you want the BEST knitwear EVER you need to own a piece of John Smedley no bells and whistles but great classic knitwear. love it - JK

Colour intensity

I am constantly fascinated by colour, it's complexities and simplicities.

Colour is a science that we often don't give any thought to. Have you noticed how you feel wearing a particular colour? or how other people react to you wearing a particular colour?

Do you know if you suit warm or cool colours? If you look at your wardrobe, what colours (or lack of) dominate it? This can tell you so much about your habits, as well as your likes and dislikes.

What intensity of colour appeals to you? Take blue for example on this wheel. The paler the hue the lower the intensity and vice versa. Once you know which colours suit you, it is also important to understand what intensity suits you as well.

For example: a person with olive skin would suit a colour with more intensity than someone who has pale and freckled skin. You colour intensity changes with age and other factors such as eye colour and hair contribute to the ideal colour to suit you.

Next time someone comments that you look 'tired' have a look at the colour you are wearing as it's probably washing you out.

Next time someone comments on your eye colour, hair etc the colour you are wearing is the correct one - JK

Colour Part 2 - A splash of colour

How about a monochromed outfit with a splash of colour?

Here are some examples.

I love the use of the scarf with the grey dress and pale shoes. This look is so appropriate for the Autumn - a transition from warm to 'not so warm' Make your summer dresses have an extended life this way.

I adore this look and it's so easy to achieve. A grey suit is the perfect neutral backdrop with a white shirt to add a variety of feature ties. Also try splashes of colour with socks or cufflinks. They eye will notice little accents of detail.

A handbag can be your outfits feature. This will turn heads your way.
You could do this in reverse and have the shoes in red and the bag in black.

If it's one thing that someone can take away from a consultation with me it is a little touch of colour theory.

We are so often drawn to what we 'like' and not what is necessarily complementary to our skin tone, eye colour and hair. Colours portray mood and tell their own story. To wear the right colour gives us vitality, energy and youth. The incorrect colours wash us out and leave us looking tired. I recently had a client with blue eyes that were invisible whilst wearing her rust coloured top. As soon as she put on a steel blue to complement them, they just burst out at you, such an amazing transformation.

Colour can be put into 3 very basic categories:

1. Neutrals as seen below by Celine SS'10 (by Phoebe Philo) These outfits use a combination of cool and warm neutrals and give off a feminine and earthy feel. A punch of colour in the form of an accessory such as a necklace or handbag could give it a totally different feel. Always have a store of neutrals in your wardrobe and they will serve you well. Neutrals are also classic so will give you a timeless investment piece. Notice how a neutral shoe elongates the leg.

2. Colours a category so huge that I can only talk about it in general terms. I just loved this Christian Dior collage to illustrate it. Colour conveys emotion and as we know colour trends come and go but what suits you will never really change.

As a general rule there are cooler colours and warmer colours that have a certain 'temperature' Imagine a sunset being high in temperature, and a clear blue sky being cool in temperature. I will talk about this more in further posts. Tapping into whether you suit cool or warm colours (and in some cases as combination of both) can unlock how to bring out your best features.

Other considerations are the intensity of a colour, if it is a shade or a tint and it's hue.

3. Black and White is striking, formal and clean. If you wear all black, ensure the blacks all match (this may sound strange but when they clash the eye will pick it up) A monochrome look of all white or all black will streamline you but a black pant with a white top for example will cut you in half and you will lose height and gain width.

Don't those Italians know how to make shoes!!

Whilst having a play on the Luisa via Roma website and YES I was of course playing on the sale part of the site, (you know where you can kind of justify being able to afford a piece because they are selling their winter stock and we are bracing ourselves for the cold) hey presto, I found a pair of Gianna Meliani's at a very reasonable price and a look this is so Euro and comfortable.

The wedged boot pictured below just looks so easy to wear and has the fold-back feature which has been seen on many labels in the previous winter season. This is a relaxed version as most had multiple straps or studs and were black.

The high heeled moccasin below is the shoe I purchased, so comfortable I may even start jogging in them. Italian shoes, there is just no comparison!!

winter layers

Well I cannot believe I'm saying this but I am looking forward to a bit of cooler weather - I didn't say COLD just cooler for the selfish reason that I just love to layer when I dress.

Outerwear was featured heavily in the W'10 collections so top off your outfits with quality coats or jackets and pair with statement shoes.

I perhaps start off with a fine silk jersey singlet, then a on goes a knit with a belt, tights, skirt boots (you get the picture) and top it all off with a feature scarf or lipstick. Jewellery is put on last remember no gold and silver together)

Winter has so many possibilities for colour and texture as this photo illustrates. Oh and by the way, harem pants as worn in this shot are great with booties to lengthen the ankle and leg. With flats the silhouette would not quite work as well.

Lady on left is working 2 trends which are 'so hot right now' (thanks Zoolander) One is the military trend and the other is the layering of short over long, not so easy to pull off but done so well here.

Have fun with layers, make summer dresses a feature under knits or jackets. Layer fitted tops for comfort, warmth and colour (and great for not so tight tummies) Use belts and scarves to compliment or dominate, try a beanie or beret and pin a brooch to it - you name it just have fun!! I didn't get to go to any of the shows, but watched and followed the whole thing on the LMFF webpage and of course was in Melbourne to absorb the atmosphere and attend some of the free street events.

The website is a great way to have a snapshot at what Australian designers are offering us in a virtual setting. As we are quite isolated from all this talent in Canberra this is such a great tool for those of us who are so interested in fashion, have fashion as part of their business structure such as retail, styling etc and fashion students - OH if only this was available when I was studying.

I recommend catching some of the shows on video especially Loreal Paris Runway 7 and watching some of the behind the scenes footage JK

Well, I've just returned from a Melbourne trip. I absorbed the vibe around fashion week, took clients out on shopping dates and scanned most of the shops in the city.

In my travels of course I observed the people - as one naturally does. I was amazed at the amount of Louis Vuitton handbags and I mean the real deal that were around. The owners of these expensive little numbers were workers, young fashionistas, ladies on a night out you name it. I wish I had my camera handy and I would have shown you.

The 'It' bag still lives on although it's true to say that shoes have taken over for a while especially with the leather look leggings and a sculptured shoulder jacket - a real winter silhouette for 2010.

Male style file - from the basics

Here are three looks they are so stylish for men, yet so easy to put together.

All can be thrown together from a wardrobe that contains the basics all mens should own.

Weekend look - retro runners, pants (or dark denim jeans) black shirt and a fine wool knit. These items should be part of your basic wardrobe.

Casual or work - trench, chinos and loafers. These shoes are the most comfortable thing for walking and driving and look effortlessly cool. Chinos are so versatile and the trench a true stayer for style and functionality.

Work - not just a drab suit but a simple and effective colour combination coupled with well fitting garments. Note the snug fit, slim tie, pocket handkerchief and correct sleeve length. Suede shoes soften the look and leave it slightly more casual.

Single breasted suits buttoned low with slim a thick torso.

Look sleek in winter

There are so many things I love about this look.

1. The accented waist. A longer torso suits this and a shorter torso a skinnier version.

2. Tone on tone. The self scarf with the coat gives a more formal feel. A contrasting colour adds more fun.

3. Black shoes and black tights. Lengthens and slims the leg.

4. Good fit. The coat has the correct sleeve and hem length. If investing in a great winter coat altering it to fit is an absolute must as sleeves too long or a hem half-way down your calf can look very sloppy.

5. Hair back. High necked and scarf styles look more sleek with hair tied back.

6. Work outfit. Wear this to work and look professional and chic.

7. A-line. This shape is flattering to all body types.

"I'm proud to be Italian at this moment" said Giovanna at Milan fashion week.

The ex-model now Vogue L'Uomo editor is a favourite of the 'bloggers' set and for good reason.

I have seen many photos of Giovanna from such photographers as Scott Schuman and Garance Dore, and there is a great selection on her facebook page. It's difficult to find a picture of her wearing something ordinary - the irony being that she dresses in quality classics but with sophisticated edginess.

It is normally the addition of a clever accessory or colour combination that makes her style so admirable. It also helps when you have the best legs in the business!

Coco, I adore what you have done for fashion.

Imagine a world without the things that you have given us, such as jersey, easy wearing clothes, the little black dress, costume jewellery and silhouettes that conceal more than reveal.

Having said that I think the modern fashionista forgets or does not realise where all this came from. Her era was that of women that were dressed only for femininity and not practicality and she questioned it, sought an answer and delivered.

The modern branding of Chanel is so sleek, Karl Lagerfeld is no doubt a clever man and a talent in his own right but how would Gabrielle react to what it has become?

Would she have agreed to have Lily Allen as a poster girl for it? Would she have allowed green nailpolish to be shown on her runway? I would love to know. Design it seems is all about marketing, brand awareness and celebrity status.

I however am a romantic and like to think of what the original designers stood for. JK

Let's face it, Canberra is a big city but not big enough for ALL the purchases we require. I mean don't you just love having those items in your wardrobe that you bought on a holiday, weekend away, or at some crazy street market stall. The adrenaline rush of a unique buy and someone asking you where you got something that you KNOW they cannot get their hands on especially at a chain store......trying to stay unique in this world is a challenge in itself.

Now that technology is at our fingertips, we have the advantage of being able to purchase something without physically having to move out of the house.

The next challenge is which websites to purchase from.

Well, instead of reeling off a list of 'recommended' sites, I've found one that directs you TO them via what products you are searching for. It's called Shop Style and I have found it very useful as the searching filters are so specific and the site is very user friendly. Just click your product, size, prize range, colour etc and off you go into 'the cloud'

I was on a mission to find some wedge boots, 194 pages of shoes later and I had to narrow down my search!!

I have to also mention TopShop who are a UK brand that now ships to Australia. For those on a budget, this is a dream as the ranges are very fashion forward and it carries capsule ranges from various designers.

Alber Elbaz

Alber is the artistic director of Lanvin, Paris - one of the oldest fashion houses worldwide first started by Jeanne Lanvin in 1909. Many of the large fashion houses have been taken over by head designers, John Galliano for Christian Dior and John Paul Gaultier for Hermes just to name a couple and Alber has done his job beautifully.

I have been watching his collections over the last few years and and constantly in awe of his mastery of fabric draping, tailoring and fit. He has an acute sense of the female form and a consistant colour palette which is strong and simplistic.
The mens collections are also so achievable and wearable and again in beautiful colours.
I love the skinny belts over tailored skirt suits, they are almost 'holding in' the fabric, such classic silhouettes and yet so now.

He is definately on my 'would like to meet him someday list' here's to you Alber.
